Chakra Primer
by Shani Enns
A chakra is an energy center that flows through both
the physical body and all of the subtle bodies. There
are 7 major chakras on the body, and countless minor
chakras that are associated with skeletal joints,
internal organs, and energetic meridians, among other
things.
The 7 major chakras are associated with the glands of
the body - pineal, pituitary, thyroid, thymus,
pancreas, reproductive, and adrenal glands.
Chakras are numbered from bottom to top. For example,
the root chakra at the base of the spine is the 1st
chakra, and the crown chakra at the top of the head is
the 7th chakra.
The 1st chakra is called the root or base chakra. It
is physically located at the tip of the tailbone, and
vibrates to the color red. The root chakra is where we
hold the energy of tribal beliefs, survival functions,
and needs. The will to live is held here. The adrenal
glands are associated with the root chakra.
The 2nd chakra is called the sacral chakra. It sits
below the belly button, just above the pubic bone, and
vibrates to the color orange. The sacral chakra holds
the energy of relationships with others, creativity,
and emotional patterns. The reproductive glands are
associated with the sacral chakra.
The 3rd chakra is called the solar plexus chakra, and
is located beneath the sternum in the upper belly. It
vibrates to the color yellow. This chakra holds the
energy of relationship with self (self esteem), how
you see yourself in the world, knowing your place in
the Universe, and mental patterns. The pancreas is
associated with the solar plexus chakra.
The 4th chakra is the heart chakra, or heart center,
and is located in the center of the chest, near the
physical heart. This chakra vibrates to the color
green, and is the connection to Divine Love and
Oneness with all things. The heart chakra has a
special function in that it is the chakra that merges
and balances the energies of the 3 lower chakras
(physical energies) and the upper 3 chakras (spiritual
energies). The heart chakra is associated with the
thymus gland.
The 5th chakra is the throat chakra, and is located at
the base of the throat. It vibrates to the color of
sky blue, and holds the energy of communication, both
speaking and hearing, as well as scent. The thyroid
gland is associated with the throat chakra.
The 6th chakra is the third eye, or ajna chakra, and
vibrates to the color indigo. This chakra carries the
energy of intuition, visualization, and the ability to
carry out ideas and concepts. The pituitary gland is
associated with the ajna chakra.
The 7th chakra is the crown chakra, and is located at
the top of the head. It vibrates to the color white*
and carries the energy of spirituality, connection to
the Divine, and direct knowing. The pineal gland is
associated with crown chakra.
*This chakra once vibrated to the color violet, but as
the consciousness of humanity began to ascend, this
chakra moved into a state of purity and enlightenment,
which is white, and contains all colors and
vibrations.
